12/8/2022 0 Comments New mac pro upgrade cpu![]() ![]() Put the cleaned heatsinks back down nice and straight onto the new cpu. Add thermal paste buy going left to right horizontal on the chip and not edge to edge but from about a 1/4 of the way in leaving no paste on the edges. Install CPU A which is the one on the right, do not cut the connectors as I did or go ahead but it makes it much more difficult to get the heat sinks back on. Remove all ram and both CPUs and remove and clean heatinks install thermal pads if not removing IHS caps. ![]() ![]() I would recommend this method of install. I have had no issues with leaving them on. I really think the best way to go, is not de lidding them unless you practiced on a throw away chip to see how easy or hard it is, some folks say it's easy but I would not want to risk it myself with 5690s. I guess the one risk might be if you went for the 5690 it may run hotter without the cap on than the original chips but it may be of know significance. That way you do not have to do the extra work of adding thermal pads and cutting the connectors on the heats syncs and when you screw down the heat syncs they should be very close to the same amount of turns it took to unscrew them. To ZAP your PRAM start up your Mac Pro and before you hear the boot chime hold down the "command", "option", "p" and "r" keys all at the same time, continue holding them down until you hear the boot chime a second time, it may take 15-20 seconds then let up on the keys and the Mac will now show you have the 1333 ram installed. This video is to help those who wish to roll the dice and do the surgery, please do not blame me if you fail as it is not an easy install and it is quite risky, there are people out on ebay who offer the service for a price.Īlso after the firmware update and if you installed new 1333 ram in your mac pro you need to ZAP your PRAM to get the faster ram to show up. First I upgraded the firmware making it a 5,1 which then enables the computer to recognize more powerful processors and ram. ![]() This video is of me installing two Xeon 5650s into my 2009 Mac Pro 8 core 2.26ghz mac pro. ![]()
